For a few years now there’s been a website in the Netherlands and Belgium that asks participants to fill out their details on a weekly basis with regard to cold and influenza symptoms.
After that there was a Portuguese site doing the same thing.
And now there is an Italian site as well.
There is still not much known about migratory patterns and occurences of the flu within the world, these websites will help create more understanding, so please help them out. It will take a maximum of 5 minutes per week, but the information is very useful for scientists (virologists).
Here in Rotterdam we have a Chinese supermarket called in Dutch phonetic Cantonese ‘Wah Nam Hong’, which in Jyutping (waa4 naam4 hong4) stands for the hanzi 華南行. Literally translated 華南 stands for South China and matches the obvious Cantonese heritage. The 行 stands for a profession or business line.
What is interesting to me is that in Japanese (日本語) you read 華南 as かなん and it means South China as well. However, 行 would be こう or ぎょう and has not retained the profession/business line meaning at all.
Apparently my body didn’t quite like the trip back and resulting sleep.
Went to bed at like 22:00 Sunday evening and woke up at 01:45 or so. Fully awake. Took until 03:30 or so before I finally fell asleep again. Woke up a bit at 06:30 and fell asleep again. Lovely the way your body adjusts to differing timezones.
Got back from Brasil yesterday.
Had a wonderful three weeks in São Paulo. Although if you look for a holiday in Brasil you might want to spend at maximum one week in São Paulo, since it is after all a big city and not the beach or so.
Visited Mogi das Cruzes, Bertioga, and Caraguatatuba by car.
OK, my country has officially lost its marbles.
NL, as leader of the EU now, has given priority in the resolution queue to this proposal issued in April 2004 (see: http://www.statewatch.org/news/2004/apr/8958-04-dataret.pdf). On top of that they are also ‘positively receptive’
Statewatch.org reported back in April the following legal analysis http://www.statewatch.org/news/2004/apr/21dataretention.htm
Best excerpts from that page:
- “This is a proposal so intrusive that Ashcroft, Ridge and company can only dream about it, exceeding even the US Patriot Act”
- It will put in place the compulsory retention of all communications traffic and location data – land and mobile telephones, faxes, e-mails, internet histories and any future communications technology.
Did you notice the any future communications technology part? Are you the type of person that signs a contract with any company which basically is a blanket contract where the company can change your contract at will without you having to sign it again to agree to it?
Are we now so collectively brainwashed about the prospect of an impending terror attack that we are willing to sacrifice our basic freedoms? What is next? Registration of religion and sexual preference? I know, lets start up the Schutzstaffel again!
